Art & Design
At Sexton’s Manor Primary School, we believe that art and design play a vital role in developing creativity, self-expression and confidence. Our art curriculum enables pupils to communicate ideas, explore their imagination and develop an appreciation of creativity across different cultures and time periods.
We teach art and design using the Kapow Primary Art Scheme of Work, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum (2014). The scheme provides a well-sequenced and progressive curriculum that ensures pupils develop their skills, knowledge and understanding as they move through the school.
Through the Kapow curriculum, pupils are taught to use a range of materials creatively, develop and practise artistic techniques, and learn about great artists, craft makers and designers. Children are given opportunities to experiment, take creative risks and evaluate their own work and that of others, developing a secure understanding of artistic processes.
Lessons focus on developing key skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles and digital media, while encouraging pupils to express their own ideas and opinions. Sketchbooks are used as a tool for exploration, experimentation and reflection, supporting children in developing their own artistic voice.
By the time pupils leave Sexton’s Manor Primary School, they will have gained the confidence to create and evaluate artwork, an understanding of how art reflects and shapes our history and culture, and a strong foundation of creative skills that they can build upon in the future.
