Computing
At Sexton’s Manor Primary School, we recognise that computing plays a vital role in everyday life and is essential in preparing children for a rapidly changing digital world. Our computing curriculum aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to use technology confidently, creatively and responsibly.
We teach computing using the Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work, which is aligned with the National Curriculum and provides a progressive, engaging and age-appropriate curriculum from Nursery through to Year 6. The scheme ensures that key knowledge and skills are revisited and built upon over time, enabling pupils to develop a secure understanding of computing concepts.
Our curriculum covers the three main strands of computing: computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Pupils learn to understand how computers and systems work, develop programming skills through coding and algorithms, and use technology to create, organise, store and manipulate digital content.
Online safety is a key element of our computing curriculum and is taught both discreetly and through wider curriculum links. Pupils learn how to stay safe online, understand how to use technology responsibly, and develop the skills needed to recognise and manage potential risks in the digital world.
Computing lessons encourage problem-solving, logical thinking and creativity. Pupils are given opportunities to work independently and collaboratively, explaining their thinking and evaluating their work. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to support pupils in communicating their understanding confidently.
By the time pupils leave Sexton’s Manor Primary School, they will have developed the digital skills, confidence and awareness needed to use technology safely and effectively, preparing them well for secondary education and future life in an increasingly digital society.
