PSHE & RSE

At Sexton’s Manor Primary School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) and Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) play an important role in preparing pupils for life in the modern world. Our curriculum helps children develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of self-worth, while learning how to form positive relationships, take care of their wellbeing, and make safe and informed choices.

We teach PSHE and RSE using the Kapow Primary PSHE & RSE Scheme of Work, which provides a carefully sequenced and engaging curriculum that supports both statutory requirements and our pupils’ development. This scheme is designed to reflect the Department for Education’s statutory guidance on Relationships Education, RSE and Health Education, and to build pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding progressively as they move through the school.

The curriculum encompasses key areas including:

  • Family and relationships – learning about different types of relationships, respect, empathy, cooperation and how to recognise and manage conflict.

  • Health and wellbeing – understanding physical and mental health, strategies for wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, sleep and personal safety.

  • Safety and the changing body – building awareness of personal safety, online safety, and age-appropriate understanding of growth and change, including puberty.

  • Citizenship and community – exploring rights, responsibilities, diversity and respect for others both locally and globally.

  • Economic wellbeing – developing a basic understanding of money, decisions and aspiration.

Lessons are age-appropriate, inclusive and carefully planned so that key concepts are revisited and built on each year. We support pupils in developing emotional literacy, resilience, empathy and the language they need to express themselves confidently. The curriculum also provides opportunities to discuss real-life scenarios, helping children to make safe, healthy and responsible choices.

We consult with parents and keep them informed about the content of our RSE and PSHE teaching, particularly where it involves sensitive topics, to ensure transparency and partnership. In line with DfE guidance, parents have the right to withdraw their child from aspects of sex education beyond the statutory curriculum for science, if we choose to include these in later primary years.

By the time pupils leave Sexton’s Manor Primary School, they will have developed a strong foundation of self-awareness, positive relationships, resilience, and wellbeing strategies that prepare them for the challenges of secondary school and life beyond.
