Science

At Sexton’s Manor Primary School, we believe that science encourages curiosity, creativity and a deeper understanding of the world in which we live. Our science curriculum inspires pupils to ask questions, explore ideas and develop a lifelong interest in scientific enquiry.

We teach science using the Kapow Primary Science Scheme of Work, which provides a well-structured, progressive curriculum that fully meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. The scheme ensures that scientific knowledge and skills are built systematically over time, allowing pupils to revisit and deepen their understanding as they move through the school.

Our science curriculum is organised into clearly sequenced units covering biology, chemistry and physics. These are then broken down in to smaller units across the phases. Pupils develop key scientific knowledge alongside essential working scientifically skills, including observing, investigating, recording results and drawing conclusions. Lessons are designed to be practical, engaging and hands-on, giving children regular opportunities to explore scientific concepts through experiments and investigations.

Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to help pupils communicate their ideas confidently and accurately. Children are encouraged to think critically, make predictions and reflect on their findings, developing resilience and problem-solving skills.

By the time pupils leave Sexton’s Manor Primary School, they will have developed a secure foundation of scientific knowledge, confidence in enquiry skills and an understanding of how science helps us to explain and shape the world around us
