Phonics
Phonics is the method we use to help children learn to read by
teaching them the sounds that letters and groups of letters make, and how to blend these sounds together to read words. It is a systematic and synthetic approach that supports children in developing strong decoding skills so they can become confident, fluent readers.
At our school, we follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a DfE‑validated phonics programme that teaches children the alphabetic code in a clear, carefully sequenced way. This ensures they learn new sounds in the right order and at the right pace, building on their knowledge as they move through school.
Using Little Wandle, children take part in daily phonics lessons and regular reading practice sessions. The programme is designed to help every child become a fluent, confident reader by providing consistent teaching, fully decodable books that match their phonics stage, and support for those who may need additional practice.
Through Little Wandle, we ensure all pupils develop the skills they need to read for both pleasure and purpose as they progress through their early education
